Coalition on Addictions: A PreventEd Speaker Series

Time

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Coalition on Addictions is a monthly event that provides a forum for networking, learning, and advocacy regarding the use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs. Participation is open to anyone interested in deepening their understanding of the challenges and opportunities in addressing substance use.

This month’s topic is: Virtual Theater as a Means to Address Substance Use with Elementary School Students

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Metro Theater Company adapted its planned touring production of Jacked! into a new virtual format – featuring animation, actors, hip hop artists, and a local recording studio – in order to bring the production and its message to life in a new way. Inspired by the Jack and the Beanstalk story, playwright Idris Goodwin used elements of the popular fairytale to explore addiction, dependency, and substance use from the perspective a child. Join key artists involved with the creation of the production, including Jarris Williams (who plays Jack) and animator Michael Tran to examine the ways in which this project is reaching young people across the St. Louis region in unexpected ways, generating classroom and family dialogue around substance use in an age-appropriate manner. Excerpts from the production will be shared, as well as recorded commentary from the playwright and director, with a Q&A to follow with the artists and MTC Managing Director Joe Gfaller.

One CEU contact hour certificate is available for $5.00. Individuals holding a CHES/MCHES certification can earn one CECH for $5.00.

This month’s COA will be a webinar hosted on Zoom. Attendees are welcome to join this virtual meeting at 11:45am for networking. The presentation will begin at 12pm. Click here to register.
