Early use of cannabis has been implicated in a wide range of psychosocial traits that emerge during adolescence and adulthood. Typically, early exposure is defined as use of cannabis during early teen years, e.g., prior to age 15. However, our research has shown that one of the most prominent predictors of early use of cannabis is prenatal exposure. This presentation will outline recent findings regarding prenatal exposure to cannabis, its potential impact on childhood behavior including early cannabis use. Recent findings regarding the role of early cannabis onset on likelihood of future problems with substance use disorders will be presented with an emphasis on disentangling causal and non-causal processes.
