Partnering with The Warrior Project to Implement Prevention Strategies and Improve Substance Use Outcomes among Individuals Living with Sickle Cell Disease
By Aisha Gilliam, LPC, MPS and Rosemary Britts, MBA
Because individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) experience chronic pain and acute pain, they may often utilize prescribed opioid medications, and possibly other substances, to manage their pain. Therefore, this population faces complex challenges and unique risk factors for medication mismanagement and substance misuse.
In this presentation, we will highlight how The Warrior Project supports and advocates for individuals living with SCD. In partnership with PreventEd, the Warrior Project is working to implement prevention strategies to reduce poor health outcomes and racial disparities among those living with SCD, and improve the physical and mental wellness of this underserved population.
